While I do live here I still say it has as great of sights as any other National Forest. I have been to most of our Parks including Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, and while Shawnee is less known it still has some unique sites like nowhere else. Unfortunately the camping and lodging is very limited but it is still worth the drive.
An Illinois treasure with lots to offer! Worth visiting for multiple days of camping, hiking, swimming, and exploring. The forest is expansive and it can take a while to drive between different areas, but there is plenty to see at all times.

We have been here from December to October. We have not seen raccoons.
I absolutely loved this Forrest! I spent a week there in August 2017 for vacation and it was the most relaxing week of my life. I will definitely be going there again and probably every time I go camping. Beautiful... just beautiful! Don't forget to check out "the garden of the gods" while you're there. So much history and beauty in one place.
The one place in IL that is not flat! I loved the rock formations at Garden of the Gods and Rim Rock, and the trails that I walked down were well maintained. They even had benches along the way which made it easy for my father to take a break when needed. We went down the easier trails, but their are longer ones available. There was good parking and restrooms available.
there are many more things to explore, which may take more skill and time. Hiking in the wild and backpacking is very enjoyable.
This forest is great. We do tent camping.
Lots to do here. Specially the trails and different natural sites like The Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock and the Ohio river section you get to enjoy.
The different camping grounds we've visited have been great. Good space and environment.
